About Formby

The National Trust’s pinewoods are home to red squirrels, within the North Merseyside and West Lancashire red squirrel stronghold. The dunes are part of the Sefton Coast Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Green Lane conservation area, in Freshfield, was designated in 1983. It includes 17th-century May Cottage and St Peter’s Church, built in 1746.

The coast here moves. Sefton Council describes the Formby dunes as soft defences that can lose several metres in a single storm, and records that Storm Ciara took about 10.3 metres of coastline at Cabin Hill.

Formby and Freshfield stations are on the Merseyrail line between Southport and Liverpool.

Heritage and conservation

  • Sefton Coast Site of Special Scientific Interest, including the Formby dunes

Worth looking out for

  • Trees. Many Formby sites are wooded. Check for Tree Preservation Orders and conservation area rules before any tree work.
  • Shared roads and open spaces. On private estates, an estate charge usually pays for upkeep. Clear budgets keep it fair.
  • Coastal weather. Salt, wind and rain mean some parts of a building need attention more often.
  • Insurance. Make sure the rebuilding cost is up to date.

Every building is different. Book a call back and we’ll talk you through what matters for yours.
