About Birkdale and Ainsdale

Birkdale has four conservation areas: Birkdale Village, Birkdale Park, West Birkdale and Gloucester Road. Purpose-built blocks, converted villas and coastal developments sit side by side.

In July 2026 Royal Birkdale hosted the 154th Open, its 11th.

Ainsdale Sand Dunes National Nature Reserve has over 450 plant species and is a stronghold of the natterjack toad. It’s about 1.2km from Ainsdale station.

Merseyrail stations at Hillside, Birkdale and Ainsdale put Liverpool and Southport town centre within easy reach.

Heritage and conservation

  • Birkdale Village conservation area, designated in 1981
  • Birkdale Park conservation area, designated in 2000
  • West Birkdale conservation area, designated in 1988, on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register
  • Gloucester Road conservation area, designated in 1990

Worth looking out for

  • Converted villas. Shared roofs, chimneys and rainwater goods need regular care. Planned maintenance avoids surprise bills.
  • Small changes. Flats don’t have householder permitted development rights, so even small outside changes may need planning permission.
  • Trees. In a conservation area, the council needs six weeks’ notice before most tree work.
  • Sea air. Buildings near the dunes face salt, wind and driving rain.

Every building is different. Book a call back and we’ll talk you through what matters for yours.
