About Southport
Southport’s Victorian character is easy to see. Sefton Council records that the line of Lord Street was set by 1824, and that the street is unusually wide because early buildings stood back from a boggy hollow in the dunes. The cast-iron and glass verandahs on its seaward side date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Many of those buildings now have flats above the shops, and the town’s villas and terraces include many conversions. Alongside them sit purpose-built blocks of every age.
Green space is part of the town’s character too. Hesketh Park is a Grade II* registered park, and King’s Gardens and South Marine Gardens are Grade II.
Heritage and conservation
- Lord Street conservation area, designated in 1973
- Promenade conservation area, designated in 1990
- Hesketh Road conservation area, designated in 1991, about a mile north of the town centre
- Lord Street and Promenade conservation areas are both on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register
Worth looking out for
- Shared verandahs and gutters. Sefton’s verandah guidance warns that one blocked gutter can cause problems for the building next door.
- Listed buildings. Works that affect a listed building’s character need listed building consent first.
- Trees. In a conservation area, the council needs six weeks’ notice before most tree work.
- Sea air. Railings, render and roofs near the coast need attention more often.
Every building is different. Book a call back and we’ll talk you through what matters for yours.
